RAI (Radioactive Iodine)
Radioactive Iodine (RAI) is a treatment that uses a special form of iodine that emits radiation to target and destroy overactive thyroid cells, often used for thyroid cancer or hyperthyroidism. Since the thyroid naturally absorbs iodine, the radioactive version concentrates there, delivering a precise dose of radiation to eliminate abnormal tissue while minimizing impact on the rest of the body. It is usually administered as a pill or liquid and requires some precautions afterward to protect others from radiation exposure. RAI is effective, minimally invasive, and often used as an alternative to surgery for thyroid conditions.
