Rafael de Riego

Rafael de Riego was a Spanish military officer and political figure in the early 19th century, known for leading a rebellion in 1820 that aimed to restore constitutional government in Spain. His uprising challenged the absolute monarchy of King Ferdinand VII, advocating for liberal ideas like constitutional rights and parliamentary rule. Although initially successful, the movement was ultimately suppressed, and Riego was executed in 1823. His actions became a symbol of resistance to authoritarianism and contributed significantly to Spain’s ongoing struggle between liberal reform and monarchical power.
