Rabies immune globulin
Rabies immune globulin (RIG) is a medication used to prevent rabies infection after a potential exposure, such as a bite from a potentially infected animal. It contains antibodies that help the body fight the rabies virus immediately, giving the immune system time to develop its own response through vaccination. RIG is usually injected around the bite wound and sometimes into muscles nearby. It is most effective when given promptly after exposure, ideally within the first few days. RIG is a crucial part of post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent the development of the deadly rabies disease.
