R.P.I. (Ratings Percentage Index)
The Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) is a statistical tool used in college sports to rank teams based on their performance. It combines three components: a team’s winning percentage, the average winning percentage of its opponents, and the average winning percentage of those opponents’ opponents. This system aims to assess both a team’s success and the strength of its competition. RPI helps determine postseason tournament selections and seedings by providing an overall measure of a team’s performance relative to others. While not perfect, it offers a consistent, data-driven approach to compare teams across different schedules.
