Quilombo dos Palmares
Quilombo dos Palmares was a free settlement in Brazil during the 17th century, primarily inhabited by escaped enslaved Africans and their descendants. Located in what is now Alagoas state, it became a symbol of resistance against Portuguese colonization and slavery, thriving as a self-sufficient community with its own social structure. At its peak, it housed thousands of people who fought to maintain their independence. The Portuguese colonial authorities repeatedly attacked Palmares, eventually destroying it in 1694. Today, it is remembered as a powerful symbol of resistance, resilience, and the fight for freedom by Afro-Brazilian communities.
