A quasi-static process is a gradual and controlled change happening where a system remains nearly in equilibrium at each step. Imagine slowly pumping air into a balloon so the pressure and temperature stay almost constant throughout. This allows for precise analysis of energy transfer and work done during the process. Quasi-static processes are idealized; in real life, they're approached but rarely perfectly achieved. They are important in thermodynamics because they simplify calculations and help understand how energy flows in systems like engines or refrigerators.
