QALY weighting methodology

QALY (Quality-Adjusted Life Year) weighting is a method used to evaluate healthcare interventions by combining both the quantity and quality of life. It assigns a value between 0 and 1 to different health states, where 0 equals death and 1 represents perfect health. For example, a year lived in good health might count as 1 QALY, while a year with some health problems might count as 0.5. By multiplying the years of life gained by the quality weight, QALYs help compare the overall benefits of different treatments, guiding resource allocation based on maximizing health outcomes efficiently.
