Pyrometric cones
Pyrometric cones are small, heat-sensitive devices used in ceramics and glassmaking to measure temperature accurately during firing. Made from carefully calculated mixes of materials, each cone is designed to soften and bend at a specific temperature. When exposed to heat in an oven or kiln, the cone gradually bends or melts at its designated temperature, providing a visual indication that the desired heat level has been reached. This helps artisans ensure their ceramics are fired correctly for desired strength, glaze effects, or other properties, acting as a reliable, simple temperature gauge inside the kiln.
