Purring
Purring is a cat's way of producing a continuous, low-frequency vibration, typically around 25 to 150 Hertz, created by rapid movements of the vocal cords within the larynx. This sound results from neural signals sent from the brain to these muscles, causing them to twitch rhythmically during both inhalation and exhalation. While cats often purr when content or relaxed, they can also purr when in pain or distress, possibly as a self-soothing mechanism. The vibrations not only communicate emotion but may also have healing properties, promoting tissue regeneration and reducing pain.
