PUREX Process
The PUREX (Plutonium-Uranium Extraction) process is a chemical method used to separate usable nuclear fuels—uranium and plutonium—from used nuclear reactor fuel. It involves dissolving the spent fuel in acid, then using special chemicals to selectively extract and concentrate these elements. The separated uranium and plutonium can then be recycled to make new fuel, reducing waste and improving resource efficiency. The process is carefully controlled and safeguarded to prevent proliferation, ensuring that radioactive materials are handled safely and securely.
