PUREX method

The PUREX (Plutonium-Uranium Extraction) method is a chemical process used to separate usable nuclear materials—mainly uranium and plutonium—from spent nuclear fuel. The process involves dissolving spent fuel in acid, then using a series of chemical solvents that selectively bind to and extract these valuable elements. This separation allows for the recycling of uranium and plutonium to produce new nuclear fuel, reducing waste and making efficient use of resources. PUREX is a key technique in nuclear fuel reprocessing, balancing safety, effectiveness, and waste management.
