pupillage
Pupillage is a period of practical training that aspiring lawyers, specifically barristers, undertake after completing their academic qualifications. During this period, a pupillage typically lasts one year and involves working closely with an experienced barrister—called a pupil supervisor—to develop advocacy, legal research, and client interaction skills. It serves as a supervised apprenticeship, allowing the pupil to observe courtroom proceedings, assist with case preparation, and gradually take on more responsibilities. Successful completion of pupillage is usually a prerequisite for becoming fully qualified and eligible to practice as a barrister.
