Pump thrombosis
Pump thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms inside a mechanical circulatory device, such as a ventricular assist device (LVAD), used to support a failing heart. This clot can block blood flow through the device, compromising its function and increasing the risk of serious complications like stroke or device failure. Symptoms may include reduced device performance, increased power consumption, or signs of poor blood flow. Preventing pump thrombosis involves careful management of blood thinner medications, regular monitoring of device function, and prompt medical attention if issues arise to ensure the device operates safely and effectively.
