pulmonary aspiration

Pulmonary aspiration occurs when food, liquid, or other materials accidentally enter the lungs instead of the stomach during swallowing or breathing. This can happen if the protective reflexes meant to keep the airway clear don’t work properly, such as in cases of neurological disorders or during sedation. When aspirated material reaches the lungs, it can cause irritation, infection like pneumonia, or inflammation, leading to breathing difficulties. Prompt treatment is important to prevent complications. Aspiration is more common in certain populations, including the elderly, stroke patients, or those with swallowing problems.
