Puerto Rican Independence Organization
The Puerto Rican Independence Organization (OPI) was a political group that advocated for Puerto Rico's independence from the United States. Founded in the 1960s, it aimed to achieve sovereignty through activism and, at times, considered militant methods. The organization sought to promote Puerto Rican culture, identity, and self-determination, believing that independence was the best way for the island to determine its future. Over time, the OPI's influence waned, and by the late 20th century, it was largely inactive, with most Puerto Ricans continuing to support a range of political options, including statehood, independence, or maintaining the current relationship with the U.S.
