Pueblo Lands Act
The Pueblo Lands Act of 1924 was legislation enacted by the U.S. government to address land issues involving Pueblo tribes in New Mexico. It aimed to divide and allot communal Pueblo lands into individual family plots, similar to the allotment policies used elsewhere, thereby encouraging private land ownership. However, this often resulted in reduced landholdings for the tribes and threatened their cultural and social cohesion. The act was part of broader efforts to assimilate Native Americans into American society, but it also led to significant loss of traditional lands and autonomy for the Pueblo peoples.
