PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness)

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is a metric that measures the energy efficiency of a data center. It is calculated by dividing the total amount of power used by the entire facility (including cooling, lighting, and equipment) by the power used solely by the IT equipment (servers, storage, and networking). A PUE close to 1.0 indicates high efficiency, meaning most power goes directly to the computers. Higher PUE values suggest more energy is consumed by supporting systems, indicating less efficiency. PUE helps data centers identify ways to reduce energy wastage and improve overall operational sustainability.
