Publics and Counterpublics

Publics are groups of people who share common interests and engage with societal issues, often participating collectively through discussions, actions, or media. Counterpublics are alternative or marginalized groups within or outside the main public sphere that challenge dominant narratives and advocate for their perspectives. They serve to voice concerns of those excluded or suppressed, creating spaces for resistance and dialogue. Both concepts highlight the dynamic nature of societal discourse, emphasizing how diverse groups influence public opinion and policymaking, shaping a more inclusive understanding of social issues.
