Pteropus
Pteropus, commonly known as flying foxes or fruit bats, are large bats belonging to the genus Pteropus. They are notable for their sizable wingspan, which can reach up to 1.5 meters (5 feet), and their primarily fruit-based diet. Found mainly in Asia, Australia, and the Indian subcontinent, these bats play important roles in their ecosystems by pollinating flowers and dispersing seeds, helping maintain healthy forests. Despite their benefits, they can sometimes carry diseases that may affect humans, which has led to both conservation challenges and public health considerations.
