Psychophysical Methods

Psychophysical methods are scientific techniques used to understand how our senses detect and respond to different stimuli, like light, sound, or pressure. Researchers present controlled stimuli at various intensities and ask subjects to report what they perceive—such as noticing a sound or feeling a touch. By analyzing these responses, scientists determine the minimum or maximum level of stimulus needed for perception, or how sensitivity varies. These methods help us understand sensory thresholds, perception accuracy, and how the brain interprets sensory information, providing insights into normal and abnormal sensory functioning.
