Psychological Projection

Psychological projection is a defense mechanism where individuals unconsciously attribute their own unwanted thoughts, feelings, or motives to others. For example, someone who is secretly feeling insecure might accuse others of being insecure. This process helps people avoid confronting their own uncomfortable emotions or traits by seeing them in others instead. While it can serve as a temporary way to manage internal conflict, excessive projection can hinder self-awareness and healthy relationships. Recognizing projection involves understanding that the blame or negative perceptions directed at others may actually reflect one's own internal state.
