Psychological externalization

Psychological externalization is when someone unconsciously projects their inner thoughts, feelings, or conflicts onto an outside person, object, or situation. Instead of recognizing these internal experiences as their own, they interpret them as originating externally. This process helps reduce personal anxiety or discomfort by shifting responsibility or blame outward. For example, a person feeling anxious might blame others for their feelings, or someone experiencing guilt might see their emotions as coming from external sources. Externalization serves as a defense mechanism, protecting the individual's self-concept but potentially impairing self-awareness and healthy interpersonal functioning.
