Psychological confidentiality
Psychological confidentiality refers to the professional ethical obligation of mental health providers to protect a client’s private information. This means they are responsible for safeguarding details shared during therapy or counseling sessions, and cannot disclose any personal information without the client’s consent, unless there are specific legal or safety concerns. Confidentiality helps build trust, ensuring clients feel safe to share honest thoughts and feelings. However, in certain situations—such as risk of harm or legal reasons—therapists may be required to share information to protect the client or others.
