PSEN1
PSEN1 (Presenilin 1) is a gene that produces a protein crucial for the function of a cellular process called the gamma-secretase complex, which helps break down other proteins. Mutations or changes in the PSEN1 gene can lead to the improper processing of amyloid precursor protein, resulting in the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain. These plaques are a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease, a condition that causes memory loss and cognitive decline. Therefore, PSEN1 plays a significant role in the development of early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, influencing brain health through protein regulation.
