PrP^Sc

PrP^Sc is a misfolded form of a normal protein called prion protein (PrP) found in the brain. While healthy PrP is structured in a way that the body can manage, PrP^Sc is folded incorrectly, making it sticky and prone to clumping together. These aggregates can damage nerve cells and lead to brain diseases known as prion diseases. Importantly, PrP^Sc can cause normal prion proteins to also misfold, spreading the problem. These conditions are rare but serious, and they only involve protein malfunction without bacteria or viruses.
