PrP^C (Cellular Prion Protein)
PrP^C, or Cellular Prion Protein, is a normal protein found mainly in the brain and nervous system. It plays roles in cell signaling, protection, and other functions related to neural health. Under certain conditions, PrP^C can change into a misfolded form called PrP^Sc, which is associated with neurodegenerative diseases like Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The normal form, PrP^C, is harmless and may support cell communication, while its abnormal form can aggregate and damage brain tissue. Understanding PrP^C helps scientists study and develop treatments for prion diseases and related neurodegenerative disorders.
