Proto-oncogene
A proto-oncogene is a normal gene in our cells that helps regulate cell growth and division. Under healthy conditions, it plays an essential role in development and healing. However, if a proto-oncogene becomes mutated or its activity is abnormal, it can turn into an oncogene, which can drive uncontrolled cell growth. This process can contribute to the development of cancer. Essentially, proto-oncogenes are like the gas pedal for cell growth—necessary for normal function, but potentially dangerous if they malfunction or are overactivated.
