Proto-Celtic

Proto-Celtic is the reconstructed ancient language believed to be the common ancestor of all Celtic languages, such as Irish, Welsh, and Breton. Linguists study similarities among these languages to piece together what Proto-Celtic might have sounded like around 2000–500 BCE. It provides a window into the culture, migration, and interactions of early Celtic-speaking peoples. Though no written records of Proto-Celtic exist, its features are inferred through comparative linguistics, helping us understand the roots of Celtic languages and their historical development.
