Proteus mirabilis

Proteus mirabilis is a type of bacteria commonly found in the environment and sometimes in the human body, particularly in the digestive and urinary tracts. It can cause infections, especially in the urinary system, leading to conditions like urinary tract infections (UTIs). This bacteria is known for its ability to produce a protein called urease, which can break down urea in urine and lead to the formation of kidney stones. Proteus mirabilis can also swarm across surfaces, which helps it spread and establish infections. While it often doesn't cause problems in healthy individuals, it can be problematic in people with weakened immune systems or urinary catheters.
