Proteopathy
Proteopathy refers to diseases caused by the abnormal buildup or misfolding of proteins in the body. Normally, proteins fold into specific shapes to perform their functions, but in proteopathies, these proteins fold incorrectly and form insoluble aggregates. These aggregates can damage cells and tissues, leading to conditions such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases. The accumulation of defective proteins disrupts normal cellular processes, contributing to disease progression. Understanding proteopathies helps researchers develop targeted treatments aimed at preventing or clearing these harmful protein aggregates.
