Protein synthesis inhibitors

Protein synthesis inhibitors are drugs that block the production of proteins within bacteria or cells. Since proteins are essential for survival and growth, these drugs effectively stop pathogens from developing and multiplying. They target specific parts of the protein-making process, such as preventing the assembly of amino acids or disrupting ribosomes—the cell’s protein factories. By doing so, they help treat infections by weakening or killing bacteria without harming human cells, which are often affected differently by these drugs. Examples include antibiotics like tetracyclines and aminoglycosides.
