Prop 64 (California Marijuana Legalization Initiative)
Prop 64, approved by California voters in 2016, legalizes recreational cannabis for adults 21 and older. It permits possession of up to one ounce of marijuana and cultivation of up to six plants at home. The initiative establishes a regulated commercial market, including licensing for growers, distributors, and retailers, similar to alcohol. It also sets rules for advertising and quality standards. The measure aims to reduce legal penalties, generate tax revenue, and promote public safety by regulating and controlling the marijuana industry, while addressing social justice issues related to previous drug enforcement policies.
