Project Loon (Google)
Project Loon, developed by Google’s sister company X, aimed to provide internet access to remote or underserved areas using high-altitude balloons. These balloons float in the stratosphere, around 20 km above Earth, creating floating LTE networks that can transmit data over large areas. They are equipped with solar panels and sophisticated navigation to stay in position. The goal was to connect communities lacking reliable internet, especially during disasters or in rural regions. While the project was discontinued in 2021, it demonstrated innovative ways to expand global connectivity through aerial technology.
