Project Glen Lyon
Project Glen Lyon was an international effort in the 1960s to develop and test underwater nuclear-powered drilling technology. The goal was to create a mobile, self-powered platform capable of exploring deep-sea mineral deposits and hydrocarbon resources remotely. It involved designing a nuclear reactor that could be installed beneath the ocean floor, providing sustained power for drilling and exploration activities without relying on surface ships or traditional power sources. The project was primarily experimental, aiming to advance offshore resource exploration, but it was ultimately canceled before full deployment, reflecting concerns over safety, environmental impact, and technological challenges.
