Project Ara

Project Ara was an initiative by Google aimed at creating a customizable smartphone built from modular components. Users could choose and swap out parts like cameras, batteries, or screens to upgrade or repair their phone easily, rather than replacing the entire device. This approach intended to reduce electronic waste, extend device lifespan, and offer personalized technology. Although the project showed promise, it was eventually discontinued in 2016 as Google shifted focus to other hardware ventures. Essentially, it aimed to make smartphones more flexible, sustainable, and tailored to individual needs through modular design.
