Primary Somatosensory Cortex
The primary somatosensory cortex is a part of the brain located in the parietal lobe that processes information about touch, pressure, pain, temperature, and body position. It helps us understand sensations from different parts of our body, like feeling a gentle breeze on the skin or recognizing the texture of an object. When you touch or feel something, signals from your nerves travel to this area, allowing you to perceive and interpret these sensations. It essentially acts as the brain’s sensory map, organizing how we experience physical contact and bodily awareness.
