primary process thinking

Primary process thinking is a mental method used by the unconscious mind to quickly satisfy desires and reduce discomfort. It operates without logical rules or reality constraints, often creating vivid images, fantasies, or symbols to fulfill emotional needs. This type of thinking is common during dreams, fantasies, or moments of deep emotion, allowing the mind to explore possibilities outside waking rationality. It contrasts with logical, organized thinking (“secondary process”), which follows reality and reason. Primary process thinking helps us understand unconscious wishes and motivations, although it can sometimes produce distortions or illusions.
