Primary PCI (Primary percutaneous coronary intervention)
Primary PCI is a medical procedure used to treat a heart attack caused by a blocked artery. When a coronary artery supplying blood to the heart gets suddenly blocked, primary PCI involves threading a thin tube (catheter) through blood vessels to the blockage site. Then, a small balloon is inflated to open the artery, often followed by placing a stent to keep it open. This process quickly restores blood flow, minimizing heart damage and improving recovery chances. It is considered the preferred emergency treatment for suitable heart attack patients.
