Pressure Injury Classification

Pressure injury classification, or staging, describes the severity and depth of skin damage caused by prolonged pressure. There are four main stages: Stage 1 shows red, painful skin with no open wound; Stage 2 involves shallow open sores or blisters; Stage 3 is a deeper wound affecting the skin and possibly the underlying fat tissue; Stage 4 is the most severe, with extensive tissue damage reaching muscles or bone. Proper staging helps healthcare providers determine treatment needs and prevent further harm.
