Prepared piano
Prepared piano is a technique where objects such as screws, bolts, or pieces of rubber are placed on or between the piano strings to alter its sound. This creates new, unique tonal colors and textures that a standard piano cannot produce. Developed by composer John Cage in the mid-20th century, it transforms the familiar instrument into a versatile sound palette, allowing for experimental and innovative musical expressions. Essentially, it’s a way to “prepare” the piano to produce different sounds beyond its traditional capabilities.
