Pragmatic Sanction of 1713
The Pragmatic Sanction of 1713 was a royal decree issued by Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI to ensure that the Habsburg hereditary lands, primarily Austria and its territories, could be inherited peacefully by his daughter, Maria Theresa. It aimed to prevent other European powers from challenging her succession after his death. By securing this agreement, Charles sought stability and continuity in his empire, allowing his descendants to rule without conflict. Although the sanction faced opposition, especially from rival states, it ultimately helped authenticate Maria Theresa’s right to inherit her father’s titles and lands.
