PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor)
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are medications that reduce the amount of acid produced by your stomach. They work by blocking the enzymes (proton pumps) responsible for secreting stomach acid. PPIs are commonly used to treat conditions like GERD, stomach ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where excess acid causes discomfort or damage. By lowering acid levels, PPIs help relieve symptoms and promote healing of irritated or damaged tissue in the esophagus and stomach. They are typically taken for a short period but may be used longer under medical supervision, depending on the condition.
