Postsynaptic receptors
Postsynaptic receptors are specialized proteins located on the surface of a neuron (or other cell) that detect chemical signals called neurotransmitters released from a neighboring neuron. When a neurotransmitter binds to these receptors, it triggers a response in the receiving cell, such as opening or closing ion channels or activating internal signaling pathways. This process allows neurons to communicate and coordinate activity within the nervous system, enabling functions like sensation, movement, and thought. Essentially, postsynaptic receptors act as molecular locks that recognize specific neurotransmitter keys, facilitating precise cell-to-cell communication.
