Postmemory

Postmemory refers to the way experiences of a traumatic event, such as genocide or war, are passed down to those who did not directly experience it, often through stories, images, or cultural expressions. It involves the process where younger generations inherit the emotional and psychological impacts of their ancestors’ trauma, shaping their identity and perceptions. Essentially, postmemory is how memories of events someone didn’t witness firsthand still influence and shape the lives and understanding of subsequent generations.
