post-operative atrial fibrillation

Post-operative atrial fibrillation (PoAF) is an irregular heartbeat that can occur after cardiac or non-heart surgeries, like heart valves or chest surgeries. It happens when the heart's upper chambers (atria) beat chaotically instead of normally. This can lead to symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, or fatigue, and may increase the risk of blood clots or stroke. PoAF usually develops within a few days after surgery and often resolves with treatment, but it requires medical management to prevent complications and ensure a safe recovery.
