Portugal's Political System

Portugal is a democratic republic with a parliamentary system. The President is the head of state, elected for a five-year term, and has a largely ceremonial role, while the Prime Minister is the head of government, responsible for running the country and is typically the leader of the majority party in the Parliament. The Parliament, known as the Assembleia da República, is a unicameral body composed of 230 members, who are elected every four years.
