Polydactylism

Polydactylism is a genetic condition where a person has extra fingers or toes beyond the typical five on each hand or foot. It occurs due to variations in the genes that control limb development during fetal growth. The additional digits can vary in size and shape—some are fully formed, others are partial or underdeveloped. Polydactylism can appear on one or both sides and may be inherited or result from new genetic mutations. Treatment usually involves surgical removal if the extra digits interfere with function or cause discomfort. The condition is relatively common and can be associated with certain genetic syndromes.
