polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are chemical compounds used as flame retardants in electronics, furniture, and textiles to reduce fire risk. They are part of a larger family called brominated flame retardants. PBDEs can leach out into the environment and are persistent, meaning they don't easily break down. They can accumulate in living organisms, including humans, and may pose health risks such as hormone disruption or developmental issues. Due to these concerns, many PBDEs are now phased out or regulated, and efforts are underway to find safer alternatives.
