Poikilocytosis

Poikilocytosis is a condition where red blood cells in the bloodstream have abnormal shapes. Normally, these cells are round and disc-shaped, which helps them carry oxygen efficiently. When poikilocytosis occurs, red blood cells can become misshapen in various ways—such as elongated, tear-shaped, or irregular forms. This can indicate underlying health issues like anemia, nutritional deficiencies, or blood disorders. The abnormal shapes can affect how well the blood transports oxygen and can sometimes lead to symptoms like fatigue or weakness. Diagnosing poikilocytosis involves examining a blood sample under a microscope to identify the unusual cell shapes.
