Podocyte

Podocytes are specialized cells in the kidneys that play a critical role in filtering blood to form urine. They are located on the outer layer of tiny filtering units called glomeruli. Podocytes have foot-like extensions that wrap around the tiny blood vessels within the glomeruli, creating a barrier that prevents large molecules like proteins from passing into the urine, while allowing waste products and water to be filtered out. Their unique structure and function help maintain proper kidney filtering ability and overall fluid balance in the body. Damage to podocytes can lead to kidney problems and disease.
